Visual Novel Review: Stella of the End

Key decided they wanted to rehash the plot of Nier Replicant and Code Realize. ⚠️There are some story spoilers please be warned.⚠️

Thanks captain obvious

Ok so honestly I don’t have much to say because this was a super short kinetic novel that took me about 13 hours to complete in auto-mode. The story is this post apocalyptic earth full of technology but people are trying to survive because there’s a massive AI-pocalypse that fucked everything up. I honestly found a lot of the quotes about how AI ruined everything really intriguing because of the AI bubble we are all currently in right now. That was probably the most interesting part of the game to me.

Well that was a fucking lie🤣

The game plot follows the protagonist Jude Gray who is a “Carrier” aka he delivers special items from client to client and his mission is to grab a sophisticated AE android and deliver it to some cyberg ass old dude in space.  Unfortunately the android is a really annoying childlike girl, who he names Philia (please no pedro jokes I know💀) and she has no clue about the harsh reality of the world outside of her creation pod. So most of the game is spent trying to transport her, and running away from wild humans because apparently there’s very little intelligent life left out there. Even when they meet another android, it turns out she was basically beaten and abused by her owner to the point that half of her head is missing and the memories of abuse have been literally removed from her brain.

This game is predicting the future

Anyway once they get to space, turns out the old geezer became like Cardia’s dad so he could live eternally to basically make a glorious plan to save the world and humanity etc. In order to do this he has to sacrifice Cardia Philia of course and attacks Jude with nanomachines that damage all his internal organs. He promises to heal him if Philia agrees to his stupid plan and she’s about to say yes but Jude is like naw I’d rather die than have Philia be sacrificed and so he just shoots the cyborg GGE in the head (I guess his only human part???) and the guy immediately dies. Wow that was so easy why didn’t we just do that before Jude was sentenced to death?! And so, after the old man is dead, they trick all the brainless androids at the Puppet’s bunker on the ship to give them supplies and send them back to earth. Unfortunately Jude also finds out he has like 72 days to live so he spends the rest of the time trying to get Philia to civilization before his demise.

Some of the translations for “nooo” were pirate talk

Philia has no idea her stepdad (and yea he decided to be her dad because turns out he abandoned the woman he impregnated as a teenager and then when he came back for her he found out he and the daughter he never met died of starvation!!) is about to die so she just follows along. On the way they find a tamagotchi robot who apparently is able to grow like Philia is (how convenient!!) and he becomes Philia’s friend and loyal doggo after Jude dies. So then years pass, Philia apparently grows up into an adult robot and then runs into another child AE android who is being chased by a bunch of pedros. She shoots them down (hell yea) and then adopts the baby android to be her daughteroo because she feels bad that she sort of uncovered her and let all these dudes find and attack her. (???? the hell is this plotline.) The end.

Curse you ChatGPT!

So yea as you can see, very short but depressing and unsatisfying. A lot of it stemmed from the fact that it just felt like they were ripping off Nier especially the part at the end where it said “welp we screwed over humanity but OH WELL!” Jude also was ruined for me once they revealed him being a deadbeat dad for real so him saying “actually I swear you’re not a substitute for my daughter” like mfer who are you fooling here, yes she is!!!!! So by the time he croaked I couldn’t care less but I liked that Philia was an independent android woman who don’t need no deadbeat man to haul her around. I think a lot of people didn’t like that she was no longer an uguu daughteroo but to me that was probably the best development in the game. In the first half of the game she was so whiny and self-righteous it was unbearable. She was literally defending some rabid child attacking and biting Jude’s leg 🤪.

Liar liar, guts on fire

Do I recommend this? Maybe not. While I liked that it was a kinetic novel so it was nice to relax and just “read a book” the story was really disappointing and just felt like “I’ve seen this plot line somewhere else” so nothing felt novel or compelling. I couldn’t find myself attached to any of the characters  except maybe the cute little Ver-kun robot tat the end. I probably bought this game on sale and it had good reviews but at this point I can only assume they are from die-hard Key fanboys or people who have never touched a Nier game in their life. 😅
