Wow so where do I start. I never intended to play Tsukihime but when I found out that the game I got on sale, Mahoyo (previously reviewed), was a prequel to it – I figured oh why not. So one big shocker to me was that this remake was…incomplete. It’s only the routes for Arcueid and Ciel so you don’t actually get to get with any of the other ladies. That said, seeing how I fucking hated Tohno Shiki, by the end of Ciel’s 2nd ending, I was mentally done with this game anyway. Ultimately it was for the best because there’s no current release timeline for the next game and frankly my dear, I no longer give a damn.

Look I did really kinda want to like this. I do really think it had a lot going for it, but man there are just too many ridiculous glaring issues with it that made me check out a long time ago. I like how it slowly starts hinting at and then revealing mysteries in the backstory, the foreboding feeling of suspense, and some pretty deece waifus (on the one hand no eroscenes, on the other hand those eroscenes were like done in crayons and magic markers.) But Shiki sucks sooooooooooooooooooo much, the pacing gets completely out of wack (both action scenes that crawl and exposition scenes that turn into a character reading off the Type Moon wiki), and the sadism & gore sometimes borders on pornographic. Like seriously there would be action scenes that SHOULD be cool (Arcueid was the fastball special with Shiki! Ciel blasts Arcueid with a orbital solar laser!) but they lasted would go on and on sometimes for HOURS! A complete 180 from the ones in Mahoyo!

First of all, I had no idea the game was going to be so gorey. I had watched the anime many years ago, but somehow the game just felt…worse to me? Maybe I’m just forgetting but I actually had to setup a “nice boat” video for my stream because it was getting too gorey. I had always told myself I’d stay away from shit like Chaos;Head but turns out, I was exposed to that stuff anyway due to my ignorance lmao. 🥴 Luckily the worst of the “visual” gore was Arcueid chopped up into 17 pieces in a pool of blood. Everything else was just text wording left to your imagination. Needless to say, I avoided every bad end like Minesweeper by following a guide and I didn’t bother going back to do them because I’m sure whatever gruesome deaths are in there, are not worth my time.

I had watched the Tsukihime anime like 20 years ago, but as the fans say “there is no Tsukihime anime.” I did go back and start quickly scrolling through and it is also pretty gorey but in a different way. It might not be as lurid as the specific images in the game, but since it’s animated you’re still seeing like blood spray and limbs flying off. That said since the anime only really covered Arcueid’s route there was no point of comparison for the gore in Ciel’s route where Arcueid is tearing her apart each time she regenerates. And finally I just want to comment that I fucking hate the protagonist of this game. Not because he’s “whimpey” or “pathetic” but because of the way he acts differently and changes his personality between Arcueid and Ciel. In Arcueid’s route he calls her a baka but is also like whoaaaa Arcuied please I’m so scared wah wah wah – until her inevitable eye power make him so horny he nearly rapes her. And then of course in Ciel’s route he’s just gross horny teenager who looks up Ciel’s skirt as she gets up to pour him some more tea and pretty much stares at her boobs and ass while she’s fighting one of the vampires. It was so annoying and inconsistent that I basically just hated him more and more as the game went on. It was the worst in Ciel’s 2nd ending where you basically had to NTR Arcueid to her face and lie saying you loved her – but the being like “lol JK bitch I only love Ciel”. 🖕 Needless to say I actually just wanted him dead and I was actually pissed at the happy good end. I mean I know it’s a good end, but I still wanted him dead for being such a dick.

lol it’s not just you. When I went back to animepiracystreams.ru to try to refresh my memory about how the anime worked, all the comments on all the episodes were like “tf is this protag”, “shiki lowkey trash fr”, “i fucking hate shiki”, etc. (Well other than when they make teh seggs and then the comments were “rare shikiw w”). Like I get that he’s slowly going crazy and trying to hold onto his humanity but that’s the least of his problems as a character! That and his totally different portrayal between the two routes honestly. He’s practically a completely different person with Arcueid compared to Ciel.

On the other hand, I don’t really get why Arcueid got so infatuated with a guy who chopped her up into bits and pieces. Like girl, you’re a strong ass True Ancestor vampire, you can have like any man you want, and you pick this horny dumb ass high school fetus. 🗿So while I normally go FUCK YEA SHIPPING/ROMANCE I actually really hated the shipping and romance in this game and I really just wanted the heroines to end up alone like “yea I don’t need that loser” or as Kanade joked, just yuri it up with each other (and honestly in the omake Nekoarc was totally for that idea but Ciel is obsessed with her boytoy so yea that wasn’t happening.)

Some people may think it’s a bad end that Shiki doesn’t end up with Arcueid but actually this is the best end because she doesn’t need him.

I think, thiiiiiiiiiiiiiink that technically the reason that Arcueid is so infatuated with Shiki isn’t because “kyaaaaah Potato-kun you’re so dreamy uwu” but because it’s part of that link both of them have with Roa. It’s just easier to imagine “oh yeah ofc the hormonal Japanese teenager is gonna have white blood disease for the ethereal vampire princess derpwaifu” that you forget that the real reason is their Roa link (hence why they do that “You want to BLANK 2B” thing with him and Arcuied). Now Ciel, that one I can’t explain.

Overall, I don’t really say I enjoyed the game. I actually enjoyed Mahoyo, and Aozaki Aoko was awesome and I’m sure somewhere out there she is facepalming to see what her disciple (Shiki) had become after all that time she spent trying to teach him not to be a failchild. I also read some spoilers about Shiki’s family and the 2 maids Hisui and Kohaku and it was so filthy and disgusting I actually am glad I’ve vowed not to continue with this series. Actually I think I am done with TypeMoon games in general. I know I am not the target audience, but despite not being the target audience, I enjoyed old Key games like Kanon, Clannad and Air. I figured since this was kind of from the same era of galge/eroge – with the ero removed – I could get into the story. Well I might have gotten more into it if the protagonist wasn’t such a wanker. 😥
