So we had the misfortune of playing this terrible Persona 5 sequel and honestly it shouldn’t even be called a sequel. How can you call it a sequel when you literally have a repeat of what happened in the last game, including a repeat boss (wtf?). ಠ_ಠ
Okay seriously though I don’t really hate this game. I think it’s more that we have very high standards for it because it’s a Persona game and the game didn’t reach meet those expectations. When I went back to our recent reviews of games like Shart Oshit those were sooooooooooo much worse than this.

I could go on and on why I hate this game but there are 2 very big reasons. First, I hate the battle system. It’s fighting trash, lots and LOTS of trash. It was like Valkyrie Elysium all over again. Valkyrie Elysium battle system was a lot easier though, but this was extra annoying having to go through all your garbage personas because obtaining personas in this game is really annoying. Everything I liked about turn based P5 and the ease of leveling/obtaining personas well that shit’s all gone now. It’s grindy and annoying and even on easy mode it was irritating.
lol it is actually MUCH easier to get personas in this version and in retrospect I wish that P5 had the QOL improvements here. For starters, if you get a persona when your storage is full it still gets registered to your pokedex so you can recruit it later. Then when you throw your pokeymans into the blender the game automatically registers the versions before blending them and also can purchase duplicates if needed for blends with your existing personas.

Anyway the combat is boring partly because the Pokemon battles of Persona are too obvious to be interesting (hurr durr use the obvious elemental counter hurr durr), which is then also grafted onto a Musou game meaning that you’re constantly fighting tons of pointless trash mobs. That setup might be fun and make sense if your game is about like Guan Yu or Kenshiro or Guts cleaving through zakos, but “killing enormous numbers of randos” is not what the Phantom Thieves are all about! They’re supposed to be sneaky!!!!!!! Plus all the combos and stuff that this game adds to be a Musou game are often ultimately pointless because you’re either against trash that instantly dies (like you sneak up on them and then immediately bokoboko them), or often times bosses are resistant to physical attacks anyway so you need to use persona skills and environmental hazards to do the real damage to them.

The second biggest reason why I hate this game is it’s a Dynasty Warriors clone with a Persona 5 skin on it. It’s like playing that shitty FF15 mobile game where you have to do the same shit you do in all those other mobile games (build a fort, raise an army etc) but with FF15 characters. This is the same thing. They took the charming Persona 5 characters to lure in the P5 fanbase and instead made you fight trash for 90% of the game. The other 10% are the usual P5 gang antics you’re used to and they’re all going on a fun road trip! But wait where are all my fun events? All the events and side quests last like 1 minute before I’m thrown into yet another dungeon to fight MORE TRASH. It was so annoying I actually refused to do a single dungeon in this game. I basically made Kanade do every dungeon and once the shit dungeon was over, I would sit there clicking through the dialogue choices and exploring all the Japanese locations that I visited when I went to Japan many years ago. The biggest travesty was unlike Persona 5/Royal you could not have a single romance scene with anyone. I don’t even count that ferris wheel date because not only was it not fully voiced, it lasted about 1 minute before BACK TO MORE DUNGEONS.

The other problem was that the game is way too slanted towards being predominantly about combat. You usually get a day, maybe two in a given city to explore and interact with people, but there’s usually very little to actually do in them and then it’s back to the grind. It also feels weird because I have the P5 mindset coming in where “one dungeon = one day” rather than this game’s setup of “you can do as much or as little as you want until you manually click the ‘continue MSQ’ button”, so even on the “off days” you’re still going back in to some of the older dungeons to complete the bear ass sidequests. I didn’t even realize at first that you can leave a dungeon to heal up and replenish your supplies because I was stuck in the P5 mindset of spending an entire day in a dungeon.
(That also said you could argue that P5 sometimes veers too much in the other direction, like you oneshot a dungeon the first day it becomes available and then all the characters are like “okay anyway so yeah we need to fumble around for the next three weeks until they finally have their change of heart.”)

Oh they added some new characters I could not care less about. The only real take away from that plot is “lol AI is bad” which is ironically timely now with all the AI art theft/ChatGPT bullshittery.

Needless to say I hated this game and I wish I never wasted time playing it. The cut scenes weren’t worth it, and to me that’s the entire point of the game. They lured me in thinking it was going to be like the first game but it was not even close. The crumbs they threw at me with our P5 gang don’t even remotely make up for the lame battle system, lame side quests, lame new characters and LITERALLY THE SAME BOSS AS THE FIRST GAME FOR FUCKS SAAAAKE(ノ# ゚д゚)ノ ┫:・’∵:.┻┻:・’.:∵
Like there’s “Persona games usually use the similar structure and story beats, like you can tell ‘oh it’s November now, time for the story to kick into high gear'” but I didn’t expect the game to have literally the same boss as P5. I assumed “yeah yeah, they’re gonna randomly introduce some god now that was the REAL source of all this like they always do.” And even the same story beats too like a plagiarist artist, corrupt drunken politician that gets the cops to frame someone else, the unscrupulous CEO with a sci-fi themed dungeon, etc.

TL;DR don’t play this game and if you really are curious about the P5 gang just find the cut scenes on youtube. ( ´_ゝ`) Well…unless you really just love Dynasty Warriors and want to fight trash for 30 hours as Joker and Friends.
Do not pursue Lu Bu this game. Next time they get Koei to make a Persona game they better hire the Angelique team instead.
